Semi Finals Dutch Championship 2007

Kees Thijssen

We are close to the start of the Dutch Championships. The semi finals produced three newcomers (Derkx, Schuitema and M. Kroesbergen), and a few golden oldies.

One of these golden oldies is the Amsterdam Grandmaster Hein Meijer, who will play the finals again after two years of absence. In the last round Hein had to win his game against Paul Sier to be sure of a place amongs the first three ……

Hn Meijer - P. Sier 2-0
Semi Finals Dutch Championships 2007 9th round 24-02-07

Complete game

1. 32-28 17-22
2. 28x17 11x22
3. 37-32 12-17
4. 31-26 06-11
5. 36-31 08-12
6. 32-27 16-21
7. 27x16 22-28
8. 33x22 18x36

A promising start. Both players want to make a spectacle of the game.

9. 41-37 19-23 10. 39-33 14-19 11. 44-39 10-14 12. 38-32 05-10

Apparently a normal move, but Black will have to deal with the consequences the whole game... An often tried alternative is 12…. 12-18,7-12 etc.

13. 42-38 13-18 14. 46-41 09-13 15. 34-29

A well known move which leads to an advantage is 15. 33-28.

Position after 14... 09-13
Analysis

After 15... 02-08 16. 39-33 04-09 17. 49-44 20-24 18. 44-39 14-20 19. 50-44 10-14 20. 48-42 the attack 20... 24-29 21. 33x24 20x29 leads to loss of a piece after 22. 35-30 18-22 23. 39-33 14-20 24. 33x24 20x29 25. 32-27 ! etc.

With the move 15.34-29 White chooses a different plan and focuses on the Black's left wing (piece on 10).

15… 23x34 16. 39x30 20-24

After 16... 20-25 the attack 17. 30-24 follows.

17. 32-28 02-08 18. 40-34 04-09 19. 45-40 18-23 20. 30-25 23x32 21. 37x28 01-06 22. 41-37

White threatens to play 25-20,47-41 etc., so Black has to retreat. It will not lead to an equal game for Sier though...

22… 24-29 23. 34x23 17-22 24. 28x17 19x39 25. 43x34 11x22 26. 38-33

Black has constant problems.
The much needed move 14-19 is still not possible (25-20,47-41 etc. W+), while Black also needs to take into account the possible attack on the piece on 22 (37-32-28).

26… 13-19 27. 50-45 08-13 28. 37-32 19-23? 29. 34-29 ?

Positionally there is nothing wrong with 29. 34-29.

Position after 28... 19-23 ?
White plays and wins

But White forgets to win with 29. 25-20! 15x24 30. 47-41 36x47 31. 34-30 47x29 32. 30x19 14x23 33. 40-34 29x40 34. 45x34.

29… 23x34 30. 40x29 12-18

Combinations with 47-41 are still being used. If 30... 14-19 then 31. 47-41, 29-24 etc.

31. 49-43 07-12

The Black position is getting worse and worse because of the impossibility of developing the left wing.

32. 32-28 22-27 33. 43-38 14-19 34. 35-30 10-14 35. 45-40 03-08 36. 40-35 06-11 37. 16x07 12x01

Positionally White has pretty much won.
But now it is up to his technique to finish off the game.
It seems like he has ample possibilities. What he plays is still right.

38. 30-24 19x30 39. 35x24 01-06 40. 38-32 27x38 41. 33x42 06-11

So far, so good. But from this moment on his game gets a little insecure.

42. 42-38 08-12 43. 28-23 leads to a win, because 43... 18-22 is prevented : 44. 25-20,47-41,23-19 etc. W+ and also after 43. ….11-17 44. 48-43 18-22 there is a nice finishing combination with 45. 23-19 14x34 46. 47-41 36x47 47. 26-21 47x20 48. 25x03 17x26 49. 03x02 W+.

42. 42-37

Analytically not wrong, but makes it harder to win.

42… 08-12 43. 48-43 12-17 44. 28-23 18-22 45. 43-38 11-16

The critical moment is there. Black has got a little bit more room to move (compared to 42.42-38), but is still in a losing position. In mutual time problems, both players make mistakes.

46. 38-33 ?

Stand na 45... 11-16
Analysevariant

A beautiful way to win is available :
46. 25-20 14x25
47. 23-19 13-18
48. 19-13 18-23
49. 29x27 09x18
and now the great move 50. 37-31 ! with the threat 27-21. After
50. …..16-21
51. 27x16 36x27
52. 26-21 17x26
53. 16-11 White wins easily.

46… 16-21 ??

Here Black can retort more strongly : 46. …15-20 47. 24x15 13-19.
After 48. 23-18 22x13 Black has got enough defense, for example
49. 37-32 19-23 50. 29x18 13x22 51. 33-29 16-21 52. 29-24 and the action 14-19 53. 24x04 22-27 54. 04x31 36x38 leads to a draw.

47. 23-18

33-28 is also possible.

47… 21-27 48. 37-31 14-19 49. 24-20 15x24 50. 29x20 19-23 51. 18x29 27-32 52. 20-15 36x27 53. 15-10

and Hein got to a hard fought third place. In the needed rematch (with Schuitema, Oudshoorn and Lemmen) he showed character and got through to the finals.

The other "old guy" from Amsterdam Paul Oudshoorn, who normally wins four, five games in the semi-finals, did not get to win as much as normally and eventually did not make it through to the finals. His strategical win over Peter v.d Stap however, was a true, clear pearl in the often muddy semi-final waters !

P v/d Stap - P. Oudshoorn 0-2
Semi Finals Dutch Championships 21-01-07

Complete game

1. 32-28 19-23
2. 28x19 14x23
3. 37-32 10-14
4. 41-37 14-19
5. 34-29 23x34
6. 39x30 18-23

Oudshoorn often starts very solidly. The text move leads to an open phase.

7. 30-25 12-18 8. 25x14 09x20 9. 46-41 07-12 10. 44-39 05-10 11. 32-28 23x32 12. 37x28 18-23 13. 38-32 12-18 14. 31-27 10-14 15. 41-37

We are getting closer to actual action. White tries to get a classical play going.

15… 02-07 16. 43-38 04-09 17. 40-34 07-12 18. 49-43 01-07 19. 45-40 17-22

Position after 19.45-40

Black faces up to the challenge and tries to break the classical position.
The attack on the piece on 27 (24) was called the "IJmuider battering-ram" in the seventies.

20. 28x17 11x31
21. 36x27 07-11
22. 47-41 12-17
23. 41-36 17-22

Black maintains his plan and gives White a tough choice (37-31??)

24. 50-45 22x31 25. 37x26

White gets chased off the centre, but after 25. 36x27 08-12 the important piece on 36 is missing.

25… 08-12 26. 32-27

Harder for Black is waiting with 26. 42-37.
The piece on 27 is now a focus point for Black.

26… 11-17 27. 42-37 03-08 28. 37-31 17-21

Black tries to assault the White structure.

29. 26x17 12x32 30. 38x27 08-12 31. 48-42 06-11 32. 42-38 11-17 33. 31-26 17-22

Position after 33... 17-22

Black is very persistent with applying his IJmuider battering-ram !
For the third time the attack via 17-22 is played and again White has got a hard choice to make.

34. 26-21

Dangerous, but probably possible.
Van der Stap wants to defend his position actively and he tries to keep Black from taking over the complete centre.

34… 22x31 35. 36x27 20-25

White is really restricted in his play. 36. 38-32 18-22 37. 27x07 16x49 38. 07-02 49-16 leads to a chanceless game, e.g. 39. 33-29 16-27 40. 29x18 13x22 41. 02x30 14-19 etc. Z+ The only serious option for White is the exchange to 30.

36. 34-30 25x34 37. 39x30 14-20 38. 30-24 ?

White caves in under the Black pressure.
Only the risky move 38. 38-32 could keep White alive.
The combination 38... 18-22 39. 27x07 16x49 40. 07-01 leads to nothing because of the hanging piece on 9 and after 38. …..20-25 39. 40-34 09-14 40. 43-38 23-28 41. 33x22 12-17 42. 21x23 19x37 43. 22-17 White saves himself as well.

38… 20x29 39. 33x24 19x30 40. 35x24 23-28

Because after 41. 38-32, 27-22 etc. the piece on 24 will be eaten.

41. 40-34 18-23 42. 43-39 09-14

Oudshoorn will not permit himself any inaccuracies.

43. 38-33 28-32 44. 27x38 16x27 45. 45-40 27-31 46. 33-29 23-28 47. 38-33 12-18 48. 33x22 18x27 49. 29-23 31-37 50. 24-19 13x24 51. 23-18

and White surrendered, 0-2.
A game right out of the book "Ton Sijbrands-dammer" !!!
