Looking Back on Dakar

World Cup Country Teams December 2006

Kees Thijssen

After the Russians had struggled their way to the finals, they had a relatively easy game against Lathuia.
Again, world champion Alexei Tsjizjow was victorious

My first intention was to show his game against rising star Robert Misans as a whole. After studying the game I found out I would not give you much satisfaction by doing that. So, we skip the first fourty moves and go directly to the interesting deciding phase.

After a number of exchanges it appeared that Misans, handling the Black pieces, was cruising towards a draw....

Black to move

40. 02-08 (?)

A remarkable decision. It is not hard to see that the exchange to 21 leads to an uneasy game for Black. A lot safer is 40. ..17-22 and White will not get any chances.

41. 27-21 16x27 42. 32x21

Of course Tsjizjow takes this exchange and goes looking for chances to convert his advantage to a win.

42... 10-15

Black gets ready for the exchange 43. 33-29 24x33 44. 38x29 to which he'd react with 19-24.

43. 34-30 17-22 44. 21-16 12-17 45. 38-32 18-23 46. 42-37

This is the critical moment
Black is under (psychological) pressure, but does not need to despair.
Unattractive is 46. ….15-20 47. 43-39 20-25 48. 39-34 13-18 49. 37-31 08-13 50. 32-27 after which White seems to have a winning advantage.
Please note that 49... 08-12 would lead to a hopeless play: 50. 31-27 22x31 51. 26x37 18-22 52. 37-31 12-18 53. 31-26 etc.

However, even in this play Black still has a lot of defense in the following sacrifice 50... 24-29 51. 33x24 22-28 52. 27-21 28-33 53. 21x12 18x07 54. 34-29 25x34 55. 29x09 19x30 56. 35x24 33-38 57. 09-04 34-39 and Black keeps it to a draw.

Black does not need to get into this much trouble and would be better of playing 46. ……08-12 47. 37-31 23-29 48. 43-38 ( 48. 32-27 results in a draw after 48... 29x49 49. 27x07 49-43 50. 30-25 43-34 51. 07-01 15-20 etc. =) 15-20 and Black keeps ground after 52. 30-25 19-23 53. 25x14 24-30 etc.
So, so far we do not see any winning plays for White. Misans next move changes all that !

46... 23-29 ??

Played after a short moment of thinking. The right move at the wrong time !

47. 26-21 !

A painful surprise. Without waiting for 47... 29x49 48. 21x03 49x27 49. 03-21 Black surrendered, which formed the base for consolidation of the World Championship for the Russians.

Meanwhile the Dutch team tried desperately to win the 3rd prize in order to win back some prestige.

The third place was within reach against Belarus, but your author failed and the tournament ended painfully for "les Pays-Bas".

World Cup Country Teams December 2006 Dakar
3rd/4th Place The Netherlands - Belarus
K. Thijssen - A. Valiuk

Complete game

1. 33-29 19-23 2. 35-30 14-19 3. 40-35 17-22 4. 45-40 10-14 5. 30-25 20-24

Black tries to get a central solid position. Despite of this White gets a point of attack in the piece on 24.

6. 29x20 15x24 7. 50-45 05-10 8. 32-28

This starts the play against the piece on 24

8... 23x32 9. 37x17 12x21 10. 38-33 07-12 11. 31-26

White waits, because a direct attack would not be advantageous : 11. 34-29 10-15 12. 29x20 15x24 13. 40-34 18-23 and Black gets the exchange 23-28,24-29 in the play, while 14. 34-29 23x34 15. 39x30 is forbidden because of 21-27 etc. Z+.

11... 01-07 12. 26x17 12x21 13. 34-30

Based on a small tactical joke. 18-23 ?? 14. 25-20 ! etc. W+.

13... 10-15 14. 36-31

White keeps on preventing Black to play 18-23 and develops the piece on 36.

14... 07-12 15. 31-26

History repeats itself. 18-23 is still being prevented.

15... 02-07 16. 26x17 12x21

Black consequently tries not to get onto 22 and 24 at the same time. At this moment however, 11x22 would be a valid play. A short play as an example : 17. 40-34 12-17 18. 43-38 06-11 19. 34-29 22-28 and Black stops the attack against the piece on 24 while placing a counterattack.

17. 41-37 21-26 18. 39-34

White gets everything ready for the attack on 24.

18... 18-23

This starts the White attack.

Position after 18... 18-23

19. 34-29 23x34 20. 40x20 15x24 21. 44-40 13-18 22. 37-32

In the meanwhile Black understands what is going to happen.

White prepares the sacrifice with 32-28 with winning back the piece on 24.

The resulting position is not incredibly more advantageous for White, but was never in Black's intentions.

If White starts with 22. 40-34 (instead of 22. 37-32) 18-23 23. 37-32 then Black can retreat with 23... 23-28 24. 32x23 19x39 25. 30x10 39x30 26. 35x24 04x15 although White is clearly leading then.

I did not want to simplify the game, so refrained from 22. 40-34.

22... 18-23 23. 32-28 23x32 24. 40-34

White does the planned sacrifice with the thought of getting chances against the vulnerable, isolated piece on 32. This leads to an interesting, abstract type of play.

24... 11-17 25. 34-29 16-21 26. 29x20 08-13 27. 47-41

White wants to put immediate pressure on the piece on 32. Please note that 27. 46-41 is less successful because Black will retort with 17-22 after which the threat 22-28, 21-27 is very annoying.

27... 07-12

Poisonous play by Black! The planned 28. 30-24 19x30 29. 35x24 is prevented by 32-38, 21-27, 12-18, 13-19 etc. and Black wins.

White chooses for patient tempo play with directing the piece on 45 to 29.
In the meanwhile the piece on 32 is a constant worry for Black !

28. 45-40 21-27 29. 40-34 12-18 30. 34-29 19-23

Possible because 31. 33-28 leads to nothing after 27-31-36.

31. 20-15 23x34 32. 30x39 13-19 33. 35-30 09-13 34. 30-24 19x30 35. 25x34 17-21 ?

Position after 35... 17-21

After this Black quickly gets into an inferior position.

The structure 21,26,27,32 is immobile and without force.

Black had a better play with 35. …14-19 without fearing 36. 34-29 19-23 37. 39-34

(better is 37. 49-44 23x34 38. 39x30 13-19 , but even then Black has enough defense)

37... 13-19 and 38. 33-28 does not lead to the desired result after 27-31-36.

36. 42-38 18-22

This does not contribute to the mobility of the Black position, but Black wants to stop 37. 48-42 via 32-37 etc.

37. 34-29 06-11 38. 39-34 11-16 39. 34-30 03-08 40. 30-25 08-12 41. 29-24 12-18 42. 33-29 ?

After the game the best plan for White was quickly found.
White should have played 42. 24-20 14-19 43. 49-44 with good chances of winning.
After the forced sacrifice 22-28 44. 33x31 26x37 45. 38x27 21x32 Black has considerable compensation.

Position after 41... 12-18
Analysis

There are plenty of possibilities. The next one leads to a difficult but very advantageous end game :

46. 44-39 16-21
47. 39-34 18-22
48. 34-30 13-18
49. 30-24 19x30
50. 25x34 18-23
51. 20-14 23-29
52. 34x23 32-38
53. 41x32 38x49
54. 23-19 49x27
55. 19-13 and White has a very advantageous, possibly winning end game.

42... 14-19

More logical is 22-28 and then 43. 24-20 14-19 44. 29-24 19x30 45. 25x34 and this leads to the actual game. White now has the extra possibility of 43. 25-20 19x30 44. 20-14 with a very unclear position. A funny play to illustrate this : 44. ….30-35 45. 49-44 22-28 46. 48-42 13-19 47. 14x12 04-10 48. 15x04 27-31 49. 38x36 21-27 50. 04x31 26x50 = .

43. 24-20

Looking back I would have preferred to play 43. 25-20-14, because the game play is pretty disappointing.

43... 22-28 44. 29-24 19x30 45. 25x34 26-31

Looks strange, but White has to prevent 31-36.

46. 41-36 13-19 47. 48-42

Black gets out of this difficult position without any damage.
First I intended to play something like 47. 34-30 31-37, but this does not lead to any result.
The break through 48. 30-24, 38-33 is not advantageous and 48. 30-24 19x30 49. 20-14 30-34 leads to a win... 50. 14-10 18-23 51. 49-44 (51.10-05 34-39!) 23-29 52. 44-39 28-33 ... for Black !!!

47... 19-24

When 32-37 is played White reacts with 48. 38-33 eventhough this does not lead to a winning play.

48. 20x29 32-37 49. 38-32 37x30 50. 32x12

The smoke has cleared and we are left with a disappointing equal position. A little bit rushed by the Fisher-system, White, disappointed and tired, manages to lose this end game.

50... 31-37 51. 12-08 37-42 52. 08-03 21-26 53. 49-43

A useless move. Logical is moving the piece on 29 forward.

53... 30-35 54. 29-24 35-40 55. 24-19 40-45 56. 19-14

Easier is 56. 43-38 and then 19-14-10 etc. =

56... 42-48

Under returning time pressure White gets into a (lightly) disadvantaged position.

57. 46-41

Playable, but a lot clearer is 57. 14-10 48x25 58. 03-08 etc. and White gets two kings.

57... 48x09 58. 03x14 45-50 59. 41-37 ??

Does not see the obvious Black answer. After 59. 14-19 50-17 60. 19-23 17-21 61. 23-45 (the only square) White will not lose.

59... 50-28

But now he does, and total deception was a fact...
